The Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant program has been designed to assist eligible doctoral students for completing their dissertations on issues of housing and urban development.
The main motive behind the Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant program is encouraging and inspiring policy-concerning urban research in many ways such as stimulating doctoral candidates in pursuing research in fields of housing, community and urban development. By providing assistance to doctoral candidates in completion of their dissertation research within time frame; and by providing to new scholars an area of activity for sharing their research findings. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development administers this one-time grant to the amount of $15000 per year per student.
Eligible doctoral students should have enrolled in higher education institution in certified programs accredited by the national or regional authorizing agency, which has been recognized by U.S. Department of Education. They may have adopted any academic discipline whose purpose is to provide policy-concerning perception on the research issues, which have been incorporated within commitments of program and mission of HUD.
Doctoral students to become eligible must be citizens of U.S. or a lawful permanent resident i.e. a Green Card holders. They should have an approved or certified dissertation proposal that focuses and takes into consideration the issues relating to housing and urban development and can be finished within a span of two years. In addition, proposal of student’s dissertation need to approve by the entire dissertation committee by the deadline date of application.
There should also be an assigned dissertation advisor for the student. The grant begins in the month of September every year and so students need to have thoroughly completed all doctoral degree requirements whether oral or written by that time. HUD policies also necessitate student’s university to assist in their research through provisions such as a significant waiving of tuition and fees, equipment, office space, computer time and other such items required for the completion of dissertation.
This assistance should be accessible in addition to other forms of support, which the university would provide otherwise. The requirement for applications is notified through Federal Register Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) and the students who not only respond to the yearly NOFA but also get selected while competing successfully by a review committee are awarded grants. Generally awards are made by Department of Housing and Urban Development within 60 days after the submission of the applications has been closed.
